Why this site exists

Spanish verbs are one of the biggest barriers between understanding vocabulary and writing accurate, complex sentences. Most learners can recognise verb forms they have seen before — but struggle to produce them from memory under exam conditions.

It is a well-documented problem. As Spanish tutor Curtis Jerry Smothers writes for LiveXP, learners face not just one past tense but two (preterite and imperfect), irregular forms that break every pattern, the ser/estar distinction, and an entire subjunctive mood that most curricula don't introduce until late in the course. "If you're considering studying Spanish, remember that its verbs will be a particular challenge." Practicar Verbos was built to make that challenge more manageable.

Instead of presenting conjugation tables to read, every question asks you to produce the correct form yourself. This single difference — retrieval versus recognition — is what builds the automatic recall that exams and real conversation require. The site covers 128 verbs across 13 tenses, with sentence practice, endings drill, progress tracking, and full teacher and school dashboards.

Built for GCSE and A-Level learners

The practice modes prioritise the verbs and tenses that appear most frequently in school Spanish courses: present, preterite, imperfect, future, conditional, present perfect, pluperfect and the subjunctive.

Verb selection focuses on the core vocabulary that generates the most exam marks — ser, estar, tener, ir, hacer, poder, querer and around 120 further high-frequency verbs. A-Level students can also practice less common verbs and compound tense forms.

Teacher and school accounts allow educators to create classrooms, monitor live student practice, review accuracy by tense, and send revision announcements — making the tool useful for homework, starter activities and targeted intervention.

The evidence for active recall

Decades of cognitive science research consistently show that retrieval practice — attempting to recall information rather than re-reading it — produces stronger, longer-lasting memory than passive review. This effect is particularly pronounced for procedural knowledge like verb conjugation, where automatic recall under time pressure is the goal.

Every question on Practicar Verbos asks you to generate a conjugation from a prompt (for example: él / hacer / pretérito). You type the answer, see instant feedback, and the system tracks which verbs and tenses you find difficult — making your revision progressively more targeted.

About the creator

Daniel Holmes is a software developer and Spanish language enthusiast based in the UK. He built Practicar Verbos to fill a gap he noticed in available Spanish revision tools — most provided conjugation tables to read, but none asked students to actively produce the forms from memory, which is what exam conditions require.

The project grew from a personal revision tool into a full platform with classroom management, structured courses, vocabulary practice and teacher reporting — used by GCSE and A-Level students and their teachers across UK secondary schools.

The conjugation data, grammar guides, GCSE exam preparation materials and course content have all been written and verified against standard A-Level and GCSE Spanish curricula.
